Greensun Joy Over Barnesville Recycle Center Upgrade

Filed under: Griffin Recycling Hub, Recycling Best Practices, Single Stream, sunlit living

Greensun visited the recently upgraded Lamar County Recycle Center. Lamar County is now working to recycle in the Griffin Hub Single Stream recycling program. Dependable Waste is the hauler. Pratt Recycling serves as the Materials Recovery Facility.  The successful upgrade is managed by Mr. Larry Johnson, a leader in recycling best practices.  It is a joy to see this recycle center come on board with the State of Georgia Recycle Hub program. The Griffin Hub program was introduced to Barnesville during  Summer, 2008 with Greensun facilitating education and development.  We believe Lamar County provides an excellent model for Georgia towns moving forward with single stream and cardboard recycling efforts.

Greensun also enjoyed a lovely visit with the owner of the newly opened Maxi’s. We highly recommend this delightful locally owned and operated establishment.

Greensun Supports Efforts of EPA in Upson

This photo is from the Georgia Solid Waste Trust Fund Report. It proves unfortunately that fires still occur. This fire was in Upson County.

“Officials from several federal, state, and local government agencies coordinated a swift response to safeguard residents… The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) led the emergency response action at the site. Residents were evacuated from their homes…EPD has spent approximately $50,000 stabilizing the landfill cover on the site.” September 23, 2002.

Future Program Needs and Opportunities per Georgia Solid Waste Trust Fund Report

  • There is an on-going need for education to citizens on recycling methods in order to maintain both the quantity and quality of materials collected, both of which determine the value that local governments receive when selling their recyclables.
  • Scrap tires are still a problem, mainly with one to four tires being littered along roadways.
  • Many local governments, even those that have successful recycling collection programs, do not have official policies for buying recycled products. Many do not realize that increasing demand for products with recycled content will help increase the value of the recyclables they collect and send to market.
  • There is an on-going need for recycling coordinator trainings to teach local officials how to select equipment, market materials, improve efficiency, track costs, etc.

Burning was an expressed concern in our meeting with Kyle Hood, Upson County Manager, when encouraging recycling efforts.   A bid is currently open for Upson County Solid Waste Collection.

Greensun Hurt by Commodities Market for Recyclable Materials

“Because recyclable inventory is very high at the current time, we have been asked by the Griffin Recycle Hub to not send any extra at this time. Once inventory levels drop there will be a need for more but it may take several months. The commodities market has fallen so low that some recycling materials have little or no value.” Published Monday, December 8, 2008.

We will continue our business on a low activity level.

The Georgia SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) awards for 2008 were announced recently, naming Thomastonian Kevin Barkley as the 2007 Solid Waste Professional in the Public Sector.
Barkley has been employed for over 15 years as Assistant Director of Solid Waste for the City of Griffin.

“Kevin’s greatest accomplishment to date is the very successful city-wide implementation of the mandatory recycling program. More than 8,500 households had to be phased in for recycling pickup.
Kevin has been a member of the Georgia Chapter of SWANA since 1993.”
The Georgia Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) serves over 250 members as a leading professional association for networking, training, and development in the solid waste field.
Barkley will pick up the award this week at Sea Palms Golf Resort.
Additionally, the City of Griffin’s Solid Waste Department was named second place for the Georgia SWANA Outstanding Recycling Program for 2008 and won Outstanding Collection System.
The first and only recycling program of its kind in Georgia, the City of Griffin has a “mandatory” program for city residential customers and commercial customers who utilize City garbage containers.

Griffin purchased and distributed 7,500, 35-gallon roll cart containers to be used for storing recyclable for pickup to each Griffin single-family residence and every business using garbage containers issued by the city.

Affixed to the top of each of these containers is a guide telling what recyclable may be placed in the carts.

The “single sort recycling” program makes it easier for citizens to participate. Under the Griffin recycling program, Solid Waste customers place recycling container son the street curb next to garbage container on collection days.

Griffin held several open houses, ran articles and inserted flyers in the local newspaper announcing the new program.

Revenues from the sale of the recyclable collected help to offset the additional cost to the City.

Educating is a continuous and important aspect of the Griffin’s program.

The City of Griffin collects waste once a week from more than 7,500 single-family households, 2,500 multi-family households, 1,500 commercial customers, and 50 industrial customers.

An additional 4,000 tons per year of yard trimmings is collected using vacuum trucks.

Forty employees work to collect 27,500 tons of waste and 1,200 tons of single-stream recyclable per year.

The City of Griffin continues to be the area leader waste collections, obtaining approximately 90 percent of all commercial contracts.

Griffin has made offers to Thomaston to work with this City in picking up recyclable items should Thomaston decide to “go green”.

Please visit: greensunrecycling.com for more information on local recycling - Go Green - opportunities.

SWANA stated, “Kevin consistently shows his dedication and professionalism on a daily basis.

At a recent Thomaston-Upson County Rotary Meeting, Patti Robinson and son, Frank Mason Robinson, spoke to the civic group on the importance of bringing recycling to Thomaston.

Patti reported that the effort to push recycling in all Georgia communities falls under the state umbrella of “Beautification” in Governor Sonny Perdue’s Conserve Georgia plan.

The Governor’s “Georgia Recycles”program offers state grants and initiatives to local governments who are willing to make a serious commitment to recycling and conservation.

Large Georgia industry such as Coke and Home Depot are involved as strong proponents of this movement.

Communities throughout Georgia including Griffin and Barnesville are getting in at the ground level and reaping the benefits of support from the Governor’s office.

“As a part of the whole state-wide effort, we need to get in to the stream to get the goodies before they are all given away,” Patti said of the state initiatives.

Frank Mason’s company, Greensun, offers recycling options for locals interesting in residential conservation efforts.

A curbside service, Greensun supplies collection bags for “single-stream” recycling and home pick up service for a nominal monthly fee. Greensun proceeds are donated to the Gilmore Center.

Barnesville City Manager, Kenny Roberts, and Lamar County made the commitment to Go Green and instigated a mandated recycling program.

Griffin offers a progressive conservation plan. Pratt Industries Recycling (out of Atlanta) has established a large four quadrant recycling hub site in Griffin.

Pratt offers an additional option to residential recycling for surrounding communities.

Interested businesses have the opportunity to purchase a recycling bin which is collected by the Griffin hub.

Pratt has offered Thomaston 100 of their red bins for local businesses, reducing regular garbage by as much as half.

This offer includes pickup and free bins for all schools in the county. For more information, go to: greensunrecycling.com.
